There is a strong trend around the world in the management of sewage sludge. The main reason is the tightening of regulations that limit the use of agriculture or land reclamation. The Volute ring press is an original Japanese device that allows to significantly reduce the costs of sludge management and solve operational problems in municipal and industrial sewage treatment plants. The Volute press is characterized by high dewatering efficiency, low operating costs (energy, water, flocculant) and maintenance-free operation.

The Volute press requires little space for installation. It is a compact device consisting of a flow control chamber, a mixing and flocculation chamber and a drainage chamber equipped with a screw with movable and stationary rings. The Volute press uses a variable pitch screw and alternately moving and stationary rings. The filtration chamber has been divided into two sections: thickening and dewatering. In the first one, water flows out by gravity, while in the drainage zone, as a result of successive reduction of the gaps, the pressure inside the filter cylinder increases and the moving sediment is dehydrated. Increasing or decreasing the filtration pressure is possible by adjusting the pressure of the plate placed at the outlet of the sludge. The operating parameters of the device, such as the rotational speed of the screw, the speed of the stirrer's rotation in the flocculation chamber or the pressure of the plate, are set depending on the characteristics of the sludge and the requirements for the degree of drainage and quality of the leachate. The filter cylinder is rinsed only from the outside, with the use of nozzles located above the filtration chamber. It is possible to set the length and frequency of the rinsing cycles. However, experience has shown that rinsing the press can take place once a shift, after the device is finished, which significantly reduces water consumption

The advantage of the Volute press lies in its simple design. The device works without pressure, at idle speed and is practically maintenance-free. As a result, it does not generate operating problems such as belt presses (water consumption, broken belts), centrifuges (noise, energy consumption, expensive service) or screw presses (clogging of the drainage chamber). The operating costs of the Volute press are the lowest (electricity, process water, polymer, maintenance costs) of any sludge dewatering equipment available on the market. The series of types of devices allows you to select a press for any size of municipal and industrial sewage treatment plant.
